Devgadh Baria, situated just 14 kilometres off Piplod on the Godhra -Dahod highway, is surrounded by undulating hills on almost all sides. A combination of Royal Heritage and Natural Heritage are bound to mesmerize you. Because of its unique geographic locale and cultural affinity of its people has helped it protect its unique nature and cultural heritage. Devgadh Baria town is situated about 104 mts. above sea level. The hills enveloping the town are about 350 mts. above mean sea level. It is well connected with important cities. Nearest city being Godhra about 38 kms and Vadodara 110 kms and Ahmedabad 170 kms. Baria is connected with all of them by bus services. Historically speaking Devgadh Baria was founded by a branch of Khichi Chauhans, descanters of Prithviraj Chauhan, the last Hindu ruler of Delhi. When Muhommad Begada conquered Champaner (Pawagadh) in 1484-85, family of Patai Rawal went to clandestine. After few years in 1670 Devgadh Baria was conquered by Trimbiyaksinhji from Bhils and was given to Dungersinghi which progress to be a second class state spread over 813 sq. miles and divided into seven Mahals situated in the hills between Gujarat and Malwa. The Baria rulers enjoyed plenary powers and were entitled to a salute of nine guns. Succession to the Gadi was by primogeniture, but the right of adoption was conferred on the Rajah of Baria and his successors in 1890. The State enjoyed 2nd Class jurisdiction that is unlimited civil powers and in criminal matters powers to try all but foreign subjects in capital offences. The passage of the B.B. & C.I. railways through its territory and continued good administration had enabled the state to develop its resources. Sir Ranjitsinhji (K.C.S.I.) and H. H. Maharaja Jaideepsinghji were notable rulers of Devgadh Baria who propelled Devgadh Baria to excellence. Many heritage buildings besides beautiful landscapes adds to magnificence of Devgadh Baria, to name a few are The Tower, Court Campus (previously known as Secretariat Building), Mansinhji Town Hall, The Palace, Sir Ranjitsinhji High School, Nagarpalika Building to name a few. Mansarovar is the biggest lake of town besides three other small lakes. The river Panam passes through Devgadh Baria. The hills of Devgadh with Babadev temple, guards the town. Devgadh Baria, is known for its sports and even today has kept the tradition alive. Sportsmen from Baria have been national champions. For the Royals of Baria Pigsticking, Hunting, Cricket and Polo were more than life. Baria was also known for Cycle-Polo. Maharaj Prithi Singh of Baria was one of the lead players in the legendary Jaipur Polo team which had won all the world Polo championships played between 1930 and 1938. Before independence there was a Baria United Sports Club. After the merger Jaideep Singhji continued to sponsor sportsmen. Currently Jaideepsinghji District Sports Centre is being run at Devgadh Baria under Sports Authority of Gujarat(SAG). |

Devgadh Baria situated at eastern end of Gujarat, was a class II state, which gained importance with it’s strategic location between Gujrat & Malva. It has unique blend of tribal and urban culture, an art named “Pithora”, an instrument named “Pava” and number of scenic landscapes, rivers and lakes full of water. It has roaring wildlife with one of the most dense forests in the country. Above all affinity among people of Baria, lends to it giving exquisite character to the town. |
